Why an app may think you are in another country

You land in Japan, open your banking app, and it asks why you are in Hong Kong. Nothing is wrong with the eSIM: this is how many travel eSIMs work.

Where your traffic reaches the internet

A travel eSIM uses a local network for the signal, but your data often reaches the internet through the network partner's own servers, which can be in another country. Websites and apps see that country, not the one you are in.

Where QuikRoam shows it

Every plan card says where its traffic reaches the internet, before you buy. When it is the destination itself, the card says so.

What to do

Most apps only ask you to confirm it is you. If a bank refuses, use Wi-Fi for that one app, or tell your bank you are travelling. Keep your home line on for the bank's text messages: receiving texts does not use the eSIM's data.
